Ms. Forbes, receptionist at the Prime Minister's Office, answers the phone
the morning after the Liberals lose the 2001 General election ...
"Is Mr. Chretien there?" asked the caller on the phone.
"I'm very sorry, but Mr. Chretien no longer works here," Ms. F. replied.
"Is Mr. Chretien there?" repeated the caller.
The receptionist was perplexed. "Perhaps you didn't understand me. I'm
afraid Mr. Chretien no longer has this office."
"Yes. Is Mr. Chretien there?" asked the caller, yet again.
"Really, sir! Do you understand what I'm saying?" queried the exasperated
receptionist. "Mr. Chretien is gone! Should I tell you in French?"
"I understand you perfectly," sighed the caller. "I just can't hear it often
enough."
